For those who soon expect the world to end, or at least foresee a day when gas stations run dry and the nation's power grid goes pfzzzt, Kenny Ham has a vehicle for you.
Called the Apocalypse EV1, the all-electric conveyance he has in mind will be equipped with a solar charger, so that when the residential electric outlets are all smoldering holes in the walls, his car still will be on the road.
But don't rush to showrooms yet. The Apocalypse EV1 exists a little on paper but mostly in the brains of Ham and his brother, Michael, a researcher in Los Alamos, N.M.
Kenny Ham is a student at Kansas State University at Salina, where he is studying, appropriately enough, mechanical engineering technology.
"Growing up, I was interested in RC (remote control) cars," Ham said.
He said he remembered how his fellow remote-control hobbyists were always fussing with their gas engines.
"I just connect the battery and go," he said.

“In the main I got off to a horrible start and at one point I was sitting 10th. I just continued to work my way back to the leaders and lucky for me the track was easy to make mistakes on, so it gave me a chance if I drove smooth. My car was was really good for the main so I knew I could make up time if I just kept it on the wheels. By the 25 minute mark I had managed to work my way back up to 2nd and about 30 seconds back from Lutz who had got out clean and built a solid lead. I was able to get with in 15 seconds at one point but I ended up finishing about 20+ seconds back in second. My Agama equipment ran exceptional all weekend and I look forward to the next event!
Potter Dominates the 11th Annual Mapston Memorial! | RC Insider ...
In 1/8 Buggy Jeremy Potter would dominate Rd1 qualifying by over 18 seconds. Rd 2 was no different other than he managed a 24 second gap with his Tekin Powered Hotbodies Ve8! Jeremy would sit out Rd3 and focus on the triple A mains. While leading in A1 Jeremy suffered a mechanical (skid plate) he would come back with a vengeance in Rd 2 taking the overall win by lapping all the way up to 2nd place. In A3 Jeremy would again put down lap times that would allow him to lap up to 5th to take the overall win.
