I just posted a question about a basic laptop for my 4year old daughter. She LOVES to play games (Dora, SpongeBob, Diego & other Preschool games). She is learning a LOT doing it (shapes, colors, numbers, ABC's).
I wouldn't get one just for her, but I would say a desktop computer in a family room, persay. My aunt bought her 4 year old a laptop and even though she had to sit down with it, she moved from room to room and fell down the stairs, breaking her leg and shattering the laptop.

We’d sit down at Apple IIs with big floppy disk drives, two students to a computer, and play games or create crossword puzzles. High-tech stuff.
It would be a few years before I’d see a mouse at a sixth-grade slumber party. My friend’s family had a later iteration of an Apple, perhaps an Apple IIc. The idea—and practice—of trying to move your hand across the desk to control an arrow on the screen was akin to patting your head and rubbing your belly. But printing banners on the dot matrix printer was the height of cool.
Apple had progressed to the Macintosh computer by the time I reached high school, and I finally became aware of its use beyond entertainment. I learned to write a paper, then save it on a relatively small disk.
