Like all "Bontempi" instruments!
This is part of our collection which includes this Saxophone, a trumpet, a clarinet, and violin. Our 6-year old twins have used them since Christmas 2006 and we all enjoy them. Not too loud and challenging enough to keep them interested (have to blow and hold keys at same time). -
wonderful little Sax!!
This toy/instrument was a big hit. My six year old nephew loved it, even though he is probably on the older end of the age bracket this product was intended for. It really helps the child use his mind/memorization, using color coded pieces and directions for playing popular songs.Great product

MUSIC PROFILE: Joey DeFrancesco Trio
It's 1975 and 3-year-old Joey DeFrancesco is sitting in front of the television watching cartoons on a UHF channel in Philadelphia. "These commercials keep coming on and I hear [he sings]: do-do-do-do do-do-do de-do. It's the [1950's hit song] ‘Blueberry Hill' intro, and man, this music is driving me crazy," says DeFrancesco. "What the heck is this? So I dialed 1-800... I didn't quite understand the concept. I thought you just called up and it comes to the door. And that's what happened, but it was $12.88."
Thirty-six years later DeFrancesco is one of the top B-3 organists in the world. He'll be visiting Rochester this weekend for two shows at an unusual venue, the downtown location of Abbott's Frozen Custard. According to guitarist Bob Sneider, who will play in DeFrancesco's trio along with Buffalo drummer Carmen Intorre, the shop actually has its own B-3 organ. But, back to our story.
"My dad pays for it," says DeFrancesco, "He doesn't know what it is. Maybe my mother ordered something COD. He opens it up and it's a Fats Domino record. He says, ‘Who ordered this!?' I said, ‘I did.' He says ‘What!?' But then he was like, ‘Wow, you like this? That's great music.' Because that was the music of his youth. So he was pretty intrigued.

Source: eBay.comThis little sax is similar to a number of other toys around the same time. This is a free reed instrument, meaning that it produces a sound when the air vibrates a reed which is held in a frame. This makes this toy very similar to a harmonica, which operates on the same principle.
If you want to see more of these types of old toys that I stumbled across during my visits to eBay, see Sax-shaped "things" on the main part of my site. You'll want to compare this saxophone tin for the items listed under the metal - key categories, as well as harmonica 4 and 8 keys. (The 8 key harmonica is not on the index page yet, I have to redo the tables because I added a few elements....
Vintage Proll-O-Tone Saxophone Up For Auction
Source: 99kayjay99
I found the detail on this little toy sax quite remarkable, when you compare it to the other Proll-O-Tone saxophones that I have managed to collect images for. The sax has 8 keys (4 for each hand). This is a departure from the commonly seen 4 , or from the seldom seen 8 —which are to be operated only by the right hand.
If you are interested in reading more about these Proll-O-Tone saxes, the company, and/or perhaps how these instruments work, check out this page on the main portion of my site . Over time I hope to gather more images of the different types of Proll-O-Tone toy saxophones. There appear to have been many different models.
If you are collector of vintage, saxophone toys, or like saxophone collectibles in general, then this Proll-O-Tone might just be what you’re looking for. The auction for this vintage, toy sax runs until July 17. Bids are to start at $5.00. At the time of writing there were no bids yet on this well-preserved little horn.

Still, somewhere along these sample chains was an actual person with an actual horn. And eventually, a pop producer is going to have the courage to let that person remind us that a saxophone is more than just a sex toy.
