This item was purchased for as a Christmas gift. Within the first day the head of the tamborine was destroyed by light to moderate tapping. Not too worried, figured not everything is toddler proofed. But six months later, with minimal use, one of the handles from the maracas came off, beans...

The physics of musical instruments
The physics of musical instruments This book describes the results of such acoustical investigations-intellectual and practical exercises of great fascination.

While the history of musical instruments is nearly as old as civilization itself, the science of acoustics is quite recent. By understanding the physical basis of how instruments are used to make music, one hopes ultimately to be able to give physical criteria to distinguish a fine instrument from a mediocre one. At that point science may be able to come to the aid of art in improving the design and performance of musical instruments. As yet, many of the subtleties in musical sounds of which instrument makers and musicians are aware and remain beyond the reach of modern acoustic measurements. Indeed, for many musical instruments it is only within the past few years that musical acoustics has achieved even a reasonable understanding of the basic mechanisms determining the tone quality, and in some cases even major features of the sounding mechanism have only recently been unravelled. This book describes the results of such acoustical investigations-intellectual...

Future Man with the custom-made Synthaxe Drumitar

In an imaginative post earlier today on NPR's classical music blog Deceptive Cadences , blog editor Tom Huizenga writes about his recurring, music-themed dreams. "For almost as long as I can remember, I've had dreams in which I can play various instruments," Huizenga admits. "This time I was playing a mean fiddle, improvising like crazy and swinging hard like Stuff Smith...but with the round, fruity tone of Itzhak Perlman. And it being a dream, I sounded pretty terrific."

I never remember my dreams, but the realm of musical imagination runs deep in me all the same. Me, I'm a closet stickman. During lunch time at summer camp, I used to organize impromptu percussion symphonies with utensils and dishware during lunch time. Even today you can find me doing endless tom fills in the air at concerts. Of course, whenever I've actually sat down with a drum kit, I've found it impossible to keep a steady rock beat. And that gap between imagination and proficiency is one of the most frustrating realities of my musical life....

Texas Instruments enters NFC market « Near Field Communications ...

Semiconductor maker Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced an NFC IC which, the company says,is the industry’s lowest power contactless short-range communication transceiver.

The new TRF7970A builds on TI’s existing RFID product range to include support for peer-to-peer communication and card emulation in addition to reader/writer capability.

“Peer-to-peer communication continues to increase in popularity in applications including medical equipment, secure pairing and payments,”says TI. “This allows users to more easily take advantage of continuously evolving features and apps. For example,NFC devices can configure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology sessions between devices without consumer interaction, share and interact with feature- and content- rich data such as coupons at point of sale, and allow consumer devices to easily exchange files and contacts.”

A development kit can be ordered direct from TI’s website . The TRF7970AEVM NFC kit costs US$99 and is available for immediate dispatch.
