Summer series continues Sunday with Scottish music
Blackwaterside, which features Susan Craig Winsberg on flutes, recorders and pennywhistles, Christa Burch on vocals and bodhrán, Sean Clegg on guitar and mandolin, and Tim Blair on bodhrán, bones, recorder and whistles, was formed in 1995 by Winsberg to celebrate her Scottish heritage.
Born and raised in Chicago to a Scottish mother and American father, Winsberg began her musical career early. She began studying piano at the age of 5, and at 10, found the instrument that would define her life — the flute. Winsberg focused on classical training in the silver flute, obtaining Bachelor of Music and Master’s of Arts degrees from San Jose State University. When it came to making her own music, however, Winsberg wasn’t sure the classical world was for her.
“I felt I couldn’t add anything to the classical world, so I decided to explore my Scottish heritage,” said Winsberg.
In 1995, Winsberg released her first album, “Blackwaterside — Celtic Music on the Silver Flute,” which contained her arrangements of traditional Celtic music. After “Blackwaterside,” Winsberg gained an interest in learning the more traditional folk instruments, including the wooden flute, recorder and pennywhistle. Winsberg followed her debut with “La Belle Dame — Music of Love, Longing and Sorrow in the Celtic and Poetic Traditions” in 1999, which featured her own original compositions, as well as guitar, mandolin and bouzouki from Clegg. In 2002, Winsberg released “Celtic Love Songs,” which features vocals by Burch.

They might be expensive in your place but here they are only about 100 something PESOS which is way smaller than dollars i’m sure. Flute Recorders are way easier to flutes to me. That’s way flute recorders are my favorite instrument. I recommend getting the bamboo flute recorder.
The magic of the flute - Look and Learn
Many famous composers have written music for flutes. The instrument so inspired Mozart that he wrote an opera which he called The Magic Flute. Beethoven, in his Pastoral Symphony, used the flute to represent the nightingale, and Debussy gave the flute an important part in his Apres-midi d’un Faune.
Samuel Pepys, the great 17th century diarist, tells us that he “did buy a recorder, which I do intend to learn to play on, the sound of it being of all sounds in the world, most pleasing to me” in April, 1668.
Many types of flutes and recorders have been played since Stone Age times. Primitive man used to blow on reindeer bones from the depths of his cave during his magic rites. Centuries later, the Romans played flutes at their public feasts.
The most primitive flutes have no finger holes. In fact you can still buy Pan-pipes which are merely half-a-dozen of these simple flutes fitted together.
