TWIN FALLS • Iowa-based Lee Enterprises on Thursday honored a team of four Times-News journalists for this year’s special series of stories on social, political and economic issues facing Magic Valley’s Bhutanese refugees.
The series, “Future of a Forgotten People,” won an honorable mention as Lee announced its President’s Awards for Excellence in News. The team behind the series: Melissa Davlin, reporter and photographer; Virginia Hutchins, project editor; Ashley Smith, photographer; and Josh Palmer, website builder and video editor.
Ethnic Nepalis fled Bhutan in the early 1990s, then spent nearly two decades in southeast Nepali refugee camps. More than 300 Bhutanese refugees have settled in Magic Valley since the first arrived in 2008, brought by the College of Southern Idaho Refugee Center.
With the help of Kickstarter.com funding, the Times-News sent Davlin on a two-week trip to Nepal this spring to observe refugee camps, interview international resettlement officials and meet families hoping to build futures in Twin Falls. Then the newspaper began following those families through the resettlement maze, their arrival in Idaho, the inevitable adjustments and their job searches and schooling.
