My 3 1/2 year old knows the ABC song fairly well but doesn't recognize the letters (he can only get like 5 of them).
We used flashcards with both of our kids and they worked well. We would make a game out of it. For everyone you got right you got to hold the flashcard. Then at the end we would count the flashcards that they got right.
