'Once Upon a Time' Recap (Season 1, Episode 1): Fractured Fairy Tales
Writers). Emma Swann (Jennifer Morrison) apprehends fugitives in Boston as a bail bondwoman. She’s working on her birthday because she has no one to celebrate with (her quarry describes her as “by far the sexiest friendless orphan I’ve ever met”). That night at home, she finds an unexpected visitor: Henry (Jared Gilmore, of Bobby Draper fame), the child she gave up for adoption ten years ago. Although he has no evidence of this, she has a “superpower” that allows her to detect lies, so she knows that the kid is telling the truth.
Henry has come to find her in the hopes of bringing her back to his hometown in Storybrook, Maine. As Emma drives him back there, Henry shows her his book of fairy tales, insisting that the stories are real, and that in fact she is a character from his book. When they arrive in Storybrook, he explains that as a result of the Evil Queen’s curse, time is frozen in Storybook and the town clock has not moved in years. Also, none of the people there can remember that they are actually fairy tale characters (for instance, he encounters his therapist, played by Raphael Sbarge, who he claims is Jiminy Cricket). Of course, she believes none of this.
