Grouse are of course plentiful in Michigan. By that I mean they are found over most of the state but more abundantly in the north woods. Steve Smith, co-author along with Gene Hill of Whispering Wings of Autumn, suggests that the cycle might be explained by a change of breeding habits during years when the population is high and territory is less abundant. Grouse after leaving the nest strike out for territory to call their own. During these fan-outs they fly into windows, buildings in an almost mesmerized way. Once they find a place, they go on with the job of living and breeding. If there are too many birds in any one area, they begin to decline.
