Demo impressions: 'Driver: San Francisco'

In the demo there are three missions available, two of which emphasize Shift. It’s an interesting mechanic and it works surprisingly well. In the first mission Tanner is trying to convince his partner Tobias of his new found “powers.” It sounds somewhat cheesy, but the dialog isn’t nearly as gut wrenching as you may expect. Fortunately, the game doesn’t take itself too seriously, so it isn’t hard to sit back and watch the banter between these buddy cops. Once the two are hit by a wreckless driver, though,  it’s time for the player to take control. To prove to Tobias that he isn’t lying, Tanner must use shift to take over the driver’s car and do a few stunts.

In this situation, the shifting worked well but what stood out to me is something I hope happens regularly – when you Shift into the other person’s car, you hear their conversation. It was rather entertaining. From what I could gather, when Tanner Shifts it’s less like he’s controlling the vehicle, and more like he’s controlling the driver.
