Music therapy helps heal war veterans

When Patti Patton-Bader began sending packages to his son, Brandon, who was stationed in Iraq in 2003, she had no intention of following in the footsteps of his great-uncle, General George S. Patton.

Now, however, it opens the way to care for American soldiers and veterans.

Patton-Bader and her husband, Jeff Bader, who live in Austin, are the founders of the Angels soldiers, a nonprofit organization whose global headquarters in San Antonio that U.S. personnel assisting soldiers and their families during and after active duty .

One of the most recent efforts for the group is called Operation Harmony, which provides music lessons to the troops of the Wounded Warrior Project, another nonprofit organization for veterans.

It also provides tools for soldiers - a program that debuted with a letter.

"We received a letter from a mother of a soldier with traumatic brain injury, and she told me that he liked to play guitar," Patton-Bader said. "My husband is a musician, so we sent him a guitar. He played one song together, every note. He remembered. He has produced a path of healing.
